What Are ACEOs and Why You Should Start Creating or Collecting Them!

What Are ACEOs?

ACEOs stand for Art Cards, Editions, and Originals. They are small pieces of artwork sized 2.5 × 3.5 inches (the same dimensions as a standard trading card.)

Originally inspired by Artist Trading Cards (ATCs), ACEOs expanded the format to include not just trades, but also sales, limited editions, and originals, making them popular with both artists and collectors. They're grew in popularity on platforms like eBay in the early 2000s. ACEOs were a way for artists to create small, collectible artworks that could be traded and sold affordably.

What Supplies Should I use?

You can use any medium such as watercolor, acrylic, ink, collage, mixed media and can be both originals and limited-edition prints, the size is the only rule required. I've seen people use fabrics in their ACEOs! If you're a digital artist, limited-edition prints would be your best option. You'd need to title, sign, date, number the limited-edition prints (example: 3/16) on the back of the artwork. For traditional originals, you'd do the same except for numbering them unless it's a series.

I started a few days ago and fallen deep into the rabbit hole and I love it so much. It's something I already do in my sketchbook as practice, whenever I'm bored, or stressed so what's the harm in selling it for those who'll love it? I'm aiming to use this fun opportunity to practice drawing things I never would have tried otherwise along with drawing what I always draw.  This one is my favorite I've done so far, and I'll be making prints of it:

Why Should You Start Creating ACEOs?

I think it'll be a great opportunity for those who want to soft launch their art businesses. You'll be able to receive feedback on what is working for your audience, get more comfortable with pricing items, and maybe you'll get a boost of serotonin after each sale that'll keep you improve on your craft.

Why Should You Become a Collector?

If you ever wanted to have a small art gallery in your home with unique creations that support human artists and fit your vibe, this is the affordable way to do it. A lot of ACEOs are typically priced under $25 (the highest I've seen was $60.) If you're searching for gifts and treasures, this is a fun way to start.  If you're wanting to go for a maximalism aesthetic, due to the affordable prices, you can definitely build up that art wall.

If you’ve been searching for affordable fine art gifts, decor, or a fun way to make money, then I highly recommend giving this a try :)
